The K-Frame revolver is one of the most important innovations in Smith & Wesson history and was built specifically to handle the .38 S&W Special cartridge.  Since its introduction in 1899, the K-Frame has been a favorite for military and police professionals as well as target shooters and enthusiasts. Today's K-Frame is available in .22 LR and .38 S&W Special.

My S&W 617 arrived in good condition as soon as ACH cleared the bank. Was very pleased with the entire transaction.

just picked it up from the FFL and ran 200 rounds thru it. no problems and a nice 50 cent piece grouping at 25 yrds. the trigger could use a little work. right now the single action is about 4-4.5 lbs..clean but kinda heavy compared to my older 686 and 629. i like smith's new grips instead of the hogues pictured. id give the 617 4.5 stars, but i cant, so i'll round it up. bud's on the other hand would get 10 stars. best price i could find on the 617 was $800+. buds had it to my FFL for $670. i put the 617 on layway and 1.5 months later it was mine.

buds is now 6 for 6 on gun purchases for me. excellent service and an awesome revolver.

Great gun, excellent quality priced fair. Goes well with my models 686 & 66. Very smooth trigger and very accurate. Delivery went as described. Good first time experience with Buds would buy through Buds again.

Awesome Smith trigger, very accurate. Will shoot shorts, longs, sub sonic, bird shot, and even ammo that's been hit in a semi auto .22
Very Nice gun & I can find all my empties, great for double action trigger practice.
Thanks Buds

I have two S&W 617, and the 10 round capacity is perfect for keeping round counts. One gun has 20,000 rounds through it (I teach CCW classes, and the gun is used by students for the 70 rounds required from a revolver). These are the most reliable 22LR revolvers I have owned, and both still look "as new." I can not speak highly enough of their quality, accuracy and full-proof function.

Took it back to the range and although the shells weren't sticking as bad I noticed the gun is spitting brass. Then upon further inspection I noticed the bullets are actually shaving stainless steel off of two of the chambers! There's specs of brass and stainless all over the gun! One shaving inside the chamber is almost as big as .22 patch! There's definitely some serious problems in the Smith and Wesson revolver factory. I have a 686 Plus that I bought back in April that shoots fine but has the "canted barrel" issue. So out of the last two and only Smith and Wesson revolvers that I have bought, both have problems and the 617 is going back to Smith to get fixed this week! Get your act together or you're going to be losing customers left and right!!! Buyer Beware!

Just came back from the range and after putting 180 rds through the gun, it seems to work well. It feels very smooth and high quality. The only problem I had was after the first 10 rds, the shells were sticking in the chambers. First it just took some gentle persuasion to get them out but then after about 140 rds. I couldn't even move the ejector rod. After tapping hard on it about ten times with my hand, it finally broke free. I shot 20-30 rounds more after that and they were still sticking a bit but not to the point that the ejector rod would not move. So I figure one of the shells over swelled after firing. But it still seems to me that the cylinders may have needed a bit more reaming at the factory. For that reason, I can only give the gun 4 stars. BTW I did pre-clean the gun before shooting it. I have a 686 as well and I've never had this issue with that gun. I also want to say that I received a round butt grip, not a square butt conversion grip like shown in the picture and that was a bit of a surprise. So make sure you check to see what you're gonna get when ordering from Bud's as they do not do a great job at describing the gun on the product page.

Buds great as usual, the 617 was nice but after less than 500 rounds the need to adjust the sites so far left resulted in further inspection to find the barrel (un pinned I am told nowadays) started to rotate. Back to Smith and they rather stoically repaired. Communications and customer interface NOTHING like Ruger, H&K, SIG which were far better at keeping me informed of status, problem and repair as well as quick and friendly service when I dealt with them.
