I purchased this and a .410 to complete a set of all five gauges in the Remington Express line! The 870 has proven itself for decades as a reliable workhorse in the field or on a clays course! I really like that there are so many after market items available to customize them to fit your needs from stocks to barrel swaps and much more! I now own 9 Remington 870`s!

I recently went ahead and bought the 870 28 gauge Express as a hold out 28 gauge on my way up the ladder to a 1100 Sporting 28. As far as price it's fair compared to the higher end autos and double guns with great wood, but when it comes to the other pumps available in comparison the 870 Express falls a little short in 2 areas. #1 It's a fixed choke and other companies that offer 28 gauge in a pump guns supply there guns with choke tubes. That being said the other pumps available are the Browning BPS 28 and the 870 Wingmaster Remington and the Mossberg Auto comes close in price but all are either 100$ higher in price or similar. #2 Negative is that if you are used to shooting 12 and 20 gauge 1100's and 870's the stock geometry of the 28 gauge Express is a little lower on the comb so I found that I shoot low with this gun as much as half the pattern or 7" inches low at 30 yards. I had the same problem only opposite shooting high with the NEF Pardner 28 gauge. Either is easy to fix with a taller bead for high shooting guns or a rear cheek pad for low shooting guns. It's a common problem with shotguns in general so I would not make a fuss over it. Over all for the price of 495$ out the door and all transfer fees the express 28 870 is a good starter gun to get into 28 gauges or a good beater if you want something that does not cost a fortune and can be replaced if it breaks a part fairly easy. Replacement parts are available and if one wanted to the barrel could be sent to Briley for choke tubes, though I would check with them first to see, I plan on it. As far as I know Briley does the choke tubes for the 1100 28 and the Wingmaster 28 gauge guns supplied through Remington they come with Briley tubes so i am sure the Express is within there ability to thread. Website says 150$ for threading, no choke supplied. The older flush Rem Chokes can be found online but I don't know if these are the same as the Briley extended ones on the newer 1100 and Wingmaster so again I would check with them before making the choice to buy. Patterns were good at 30-35 yards range in 30" circle using 1 oz Magnum Winchester Super X loads 1205 FPS. Keeping (9) #5 pellets inside a 2.5" circle and 90% of payload inside 30" circle at 30 yards range. My numbers were (9) pellets inside 2.5" circle, (36) pellets inside 10" circle, and (131) Total hits within 30" circle on a 35" inch square pattern board. Appx. 170 pellets available in that 1 oz No#5 payload. This was with factory Modified Fixed Choke at 30 yards range, using Super X 1 oz #5's

I also have a 28 gauge Wingmaster for comparison to use when evaluating this 28 gauge 870 Express. In terms of handling, pointing, swinging, etc., I find very little difference between the two models. The difference is in the fit and finish. Since they revamped the Express line, the wood and finish are considerably better. This shotgun is definitely worth the money. I also recently purchased a 20 gauge "twin" to this 28 version, and like the 28 much better. The 20, however, came with a Remchoke barrel and a modified tube - the 28 came with a fixed modified choke. I would prefer a Remchoke barrel. I know Remington makes them for the 28 gauge because I have one on my Wingmaster.
