Brian, the .284, 7mm cartridges have about the same overall length as the .308 Winchester which puts it in the "Short Action" class of rifles/cartridges the same as toe .308. If the idea was to use a longer action so you could seat the long 7mm bullet out as far as possible this will work but you may end up with feeding issues as the magazine was designed for a longer cartridge.

Be careful and take a good look at the receiver threads and make sure they are not bent from a drill bit or tap from the front scope mount hole. My gunsmith and I thought we could fix them by turning in a barrel but broke a thread on the barrel and like to never got it out. Had to send it to Remington repair shop. I have purchased a number of Remington receivers with no problems this looks like poor quality control.
