Purchased this gun around 4 years ago. Buds had the best price and the purchase went very smoothly.
As for the gun itself I have mixed feelings:
Pros: 1- Rotating barrel locking system supposedly increases accuracy. The theory sounds good and It's an interesting design. I like it. 2- Easiest pistol I've ever field stripped. 3- Very mild recoil. 4- Accurate. 5- Thick but comfortable grip. 6- Value.

Cons: 1- The slide is steel with a glossy black applied finish which has been very durable. The frame is aluminum with a flat black anodized finish. It has not been durable as it is easily scratched. Stoeger should have used the same finish on the frame that was used on the slide. It would look better too. 2- The slide to frame fit seems excessively loose. I contacted Stoeger but decided not to spend the money to ship it to them to have it checked. Their customer service didn't inspire much confidence and the looseness doesn't seem to affect accuracy. 3- This is personal preference but I prefer the safety to be frame not slide mounted. 4- This isn't really a con but I found this gun does not like the slide to be lubricated with gun grease. The slide failed to lock back when the mag emptied when I used grease, even though I used a very small amount. I have used oil ever since without issue.

Overall I like the uniqueness of this gun and the way it shoots. I would prefer a more uniform/durable finish and a better slide to frame fit. I'd probably still make the purchase again - it's a very economical pistol and fun to shoot.

Got my gun yesterday... Fast shipping, gun looks and feels great...mags are a little beat up looks like they were used... But they are beretta factory mags.. but that's my only complaint
Other than that its a great gun...

Buds is awesome, the communication was good and shipping was fast. The Stoeger Cougar 8040 came in great condition. However, one of the two magazines it came with seemed well used and had some rust on it. Not Buds fault, I'm happy with my purchase none the less. Thanks Buds!

Stoeger has decided not to sell this pistol anymore with a hard plastic case. They changed the guide rod back to plastic (not that plastic doesn't work but i prefer all steel/alloy pistols).

Fit and Finish is okay. The Bruniton finish, which is suppose to be stronger than Bluing, came chipped in a couple of places. the magazines look straight up used and abused. The fitment of the machined parts are okay, the gun clanks and rattles and there's about a 1/32nd gap between the slide rails and slide. It's no Beretta!

As far as shooting....
Its a good shooter and so far been reliable but with the amount of play, I believe the pistol will wear out quickly. We will have to wait and see.

Bought this Gun and I Love It! It's form fitting to my hand, Shoots with very little recoil and the Grouping wasn't tight but maybe because I am not a Marx-man. The clip spring is very tight and hard to load a full magazine. I am very happy with this 40-Cal and possibly gonna buy this same model in a 9MM.

I haven't had the opportunity to get it to the range, but initial impressions are just as I thought after reading a couple of magazine reviews. Fits my hand very well. Very easy to field strip. If there's one complaint, it's that the magazine spring must have come from a '59 Pontiac! Forget loading it with your thumb and fingers. I managed to get 5 rounds in and that was it. If you order this handgun and you don't already have one, get one of the "helpers".

Bud's people are great! Emails at every movement. Couldn't have a better transaction. I've never purchase a firearm this way, but it was non eventful. My transfer point was just as nice as could be. Everything went so well, I also ordered a Ruger P95. Thanks to Bud's people for a very pleasant buying experience.

I did a lot of product research on the Stoeger Cougar .40 before making a purchase. The customer reviews are high and the pricepoint was nice. The gun feels solid as you first take it out of the case. A bit of grease on it from packing, but no big deal to clean off. I used Bud's layaway process and it was flawless. It took a few days for each check to clear, but no problems. Bud's sent me emails on the progress of the shipping and I received a call from my FFL dealer when it arrived. The Cougar shot on target right out of the box. Nice grouping from 15-20 feet away. The gun is so solid that there isn't much recoil compared to my old polymer Sigma .40. I am very happy that I sold the Sigma and purchased this .40 instead. The Cougar is an outstanding gun. I have shot over 100 rounds of federal ammo with no issues. The handle has girth, but I don't consider myself a person with large hands. It feels comfortable and shoots straight out of the box. Holsters aren't easy to come by but I'm not using it as my concealed carry so it isn't a concern. I recommend this gun and will consider buying the compact version as well. I will definitely go through Bud's again. They have great prices and even better service!

Stoeger makes an excellent handgun. I have the Couggar model 40 cal and 45 cal and will be getting the 9mm. An excellent spot on weapon, easy CCW and as for the sights, one of the best target aquisition I have ever seen. I highly recommend this weapon.

EXCELLENT service from BUDS as usual, if you are going to buy a gun online do not waste yout time with other websites, BUDS customer service and timely responsiveness to your concerns is second to none. Thanks BUDS!

This Stoger Cougar is an excellent pistol. Beretta moved their factory to Turkey and makes this gun with the same high standards as in Italy. Beretta owns Stoger Cougar and they produce a fine handgun that shoots with better accuracy the the PX4 storm that I own. I was pleased with this gun and the grips are just perfect for big hands. Bud's did a good job sending this to me and communicating. This gun used to sell for $790.00 in the 1990's. Same gun better price.
