Subsonic ammo goes slower than the speed of sound which is 1125 fps at normal conditions and varies as to air pressure, humidity and temperature. It is usually thought of in relation to noise and the ability to suppress a firearm but in air gun and 22 competition it is important because the bullets start to become less stable when they begin to transition from subsonic to supersonic fight so 22 subsonic usually is well below the threshold to let the bullets fly more accurately and be less affected by any wind. In the neighborhood of 1000 fps seems about right.
