Is the magazine release ambidextrous or can it be reversed for a left hand shooter?

It is reversible but is not true ambidextrous as it has to be set up for either left or right. It swaps over just like the regular shield and shield ez, quick video here https://youtu.be/-JPB57awbSw

Why is this one more expensive than the other M&P 9 Shield listed on this site?

California resident here. Unfortunately, some firearms for California cost more. This firearm has features to make it California compliant for the Handgun Roster, such as the loaded chamber indicator (LCI). Smith & Wesson also have to pay extra in order to get these firearms compliant, thus, bringing the price for us up up and away. I can respect Smith & Wesson for even taking the time and legal courses in order for us to obtain a certain firearm. Many companies don’t bother because it is just a big headache and costs a lot of money for them to produce. We do have lawsuits against the Handgun Roster/State of California.That’s my understanding. It was my pleasure to assist you.

Loving this little gun so far. The size is perfect, and getting two mags included is a bonus as well. I put 100 rounds through it when I first took it to the range, not a lot I know but it never so much as had a hiccup. Even with my lackluster pistol skills, I was able to get right groupings with it. And as alwa, buds has been a pleasure to buy from.

Got it today and fired 80 rounds on the range.The first few magazines I had maybe 2 or 3 issues (I consider the break in period) and then functioned another 60 rounds or so flawlessly. The 8 round magazine seems to have something wrong with it, even after the 2nd round loaded into it, it becomes near impossible to load while I can load all 7 in the other one no stress.I did have one issue where if the magazine is put into the gun too hard it will automatically drop the slide loading a round sometimes, if the slide is locked back of course. From googling, this appears to be pretty much common for all M&P shields. Sights are great, trigger is fine although not much travel distance before firing would like a more distance in the trigger. Recoil is snappy in this little gun but manageable.

BUDS comes through. Living CA has it's positives and negatives. But I put my name on the BUDS waiting list for the S&W Shield. Almost 6months later I got an email saying they have one on reserve for me, being a BUDS Team member. Ordered it that minute, and got my tracking number the NEXT day!! Finally, after all the CA stuff I picked it up and shot 200rounds without a single hick-up. Thanks, BUDS, and S&W!!

Excellent handgun. Very slim, especially good for female or smaller hands. This is probably the best conceal carry that's legal in California. The slim body helps it really fit tightly against the body, makes it effectively invisible in public if one were to conceal carry.

Optical sights are great. Shipped with 2 magazines, 7 rd and 8 rd. If you live in CA, and want a small compact this 9mm S&W Shield is the bomb.
