It's the best handgun I've ever owned or shot. I've put about 300 rounds through it now, indoors and outdoors, and it's exceeded my expectations in every way. It's large but well-balanced, very accurate with its preferred ammunition, solidly built, with good sights and good grip ergonomics (despite the cheap rubber grips it comes with). Everything works with a smooth, authoritative 'click.' When you close the cylinder on 6 rounds, it feels like closing a bank vault. I never cared much for Remington ammunition before, but that's what it seems to like best so far - in .357, the 125g Golden Sabers. In .38Spl, it likes the 148g wadcutters, which are very pleasant to shoot and more accurate than my .22LR bull barrel Buckmark. I've started casting my own wadcutters with Lyman molds and getting excellent results out of them, too. I have a Taurus 66 to compare it to and it's not in the same league as the 686. Get the S&W. Worth every penny. Very smooth transaction with Bud's, as well.

I ordered this revolver at about 1500 on Monday, 18 June, it arrived at my FFL (Champion Shooter's Supply in New Albany, OH) at about 1030 on Wednesday, 20 June. Excellent service all around from Bud's, UPS, and my FFL. The 686 no longer comes with the Hogue grips as seen in the picture. Go to Smith and Wesson's website to get a look at the new grip style. The revolver functioned perfectly. I am giving it a 4 star rating only because it arrived rather dirty and there were specks of what looked like red paint on it (I was able to scrape them off with my fingernail). When I am paying almost 700 bucks for a firearm I expect a little better.

I would consider the S&W 686 .357 Mag to be one of the best, right up there with the Colt Python.I've owned many other .357 mags in my life.,but I sold them and went back to owning a S&W.Very reliable and durable.I had a model 27 with thousands and thousands of rds shot through it and still was as accurate and reliable as the day I got it.In fact,my buddy likes it so much that he won't sell it back!

First time I have owned a S&W, and all I can say is WOW!! Right out of the box at 40 feet it was nothing but the 7 ring and in on the bullseye chart !! Very impressed with this gun and equally impressedwith the service I received from Buds!! Can't beat a Smith and Wesson!!!!!

This is top quality piece as expected from S&W. Very accurate right out of the box with Federal 158 grain ammo I bought from Walmart. As far as Buds - they are terrific. Ordered on Sunday, had the gun next Wednesday. Absolutely great service. If you entertain the idea of buying this gun - do it. Do not buy the Ruger or the Taurus. This one feels, shoots and looks better. And buy it from Buds!

I bought the S&W 686 6" a few months ago from Buds and have put 1300 rounds through this revolver: (1) 200 rounds 158gr .38spl jacketed, (2) 1000 rounds 158gr lead semi wadcutter loaded at .38spl velocity, and (3) 100 rounds of Blazer 158gr JHP .357mag. It is easily the most accurate "out of the box" firearm I have ever purchased. The weight is a bit on the heavy side for extended sessions at the range as your arm will tire. But if you want to shoot just a couple hundred rounds this is an out of the box tack driver. I am planning on buying a 686 4" next summer I like this one so much.
