I did a lot of looking before I got the ATI \"Military\" .45 pistol.
Things I like: Not as much lowering on the ejection port. Not needed, we got through wars/conflicts without scooped low ejection ports. The port on the Military model is somewhat lower than an honest to God GI 1911, and more like an original series 70 Colt. I like the lack of \"whale tale\" (aka beaver tail). Preference, but I prefer the standard grip safety profile. I like the \"button\" thumb safety. I like the lanyard loop. I like the all steel construction - even the trigger and small parts are steel. I like the Parkerized finish (aka phosphate coating). I like the wide hammer spur. I like a really nice tight slide to frame fit, and barrel to slide fit. Kudos on that! I like how they got the Series 70 (or original type) firing pin spring the right strength (really strong). I like the not too overly done barrel ramp. Its not the little military type, but neither is it the super duper 2:00 to 10:00 throat. Again, very much like the original Series 70 Colt in that regard.
Things I don\'t like: The stupid protruding plastic magazine base. The unmentioned \"loaded chamber\" window in the barrel hood. The sort of cartoonish \"military\" sights, which are sort of shaped right, but too large to military sights, and too small and poorly shaped to be really useful. The wide hammer spur ain\'t like the military standard... again a sort of cartoon copy of the old wide spur military hammer. All the damn writing and engraving on the slide. The beveled mag well, while nice doesn\'t belong on a \"military copy\".
Some individual niggles: The slide stop would not reinsert into the frame. Close inspection saw a really sharp corner that would not get the plunger started moving backward. I few seconds with a buffing wheel on Mr. Dremel fixed that. The grip safety had to be fully depressed and then \"really mashed\" to get the trigger to move rearward. One quick swipe with a fine flat file fixed that to the point that the safety works great, and that a normal \"fully depressed\" grip will disengage it.
Function fire in my back yard had a failure to fully chamber on the first round out of the 8 rd magazine. I withdrew the magazine, cleared the round, and topped off the magazine with the same round. The 2nd try worked fine, and two magazines worth of 8 rounds fed after that with no hitches at all. As with any autoloader, I\'d like to get a few hundred rounds down the barrel before calling it well functioning.
I ordered on Sunday night, and by Wednesday I had the pistol in hand - so KUDOS to BUDS too!
I\'d have given the ATI Military model a \"4\", but the low, low price overshadows my few niggles, and it still gets a \"5\" on account of that.
