The recoil was manageable after I got used to it. The grip felt really nice at first. Soon my soft white collar hands got fairly sore and I only managed 100 rounds the first day at the range. After putting a Hogue grip on, it I was much more comfortable in my hands. The factory night sights are nice too. I shot some nasty non SAAMI speced, steel cased, ammo through this thing my second trip. About 1 in 5 rounds would get stuck in each of the 3 magazines. The overall length of the ammo was too long. I did manage to shoot them all eventually. I also had a few failures to eject from some separate non SAAMI speced nickel plated personal defense rounds. Every american made SAAMI speced ammo worked flawlessly. Remington, Federal (aluminum), CCI Blazer Brass, Federal HST, and Remington +P Golden Sabers. While I don't care much for the M&P hinged trigger, this is an excellent value and quality gun.

S&W M&P 45 Cal Shield is the 100 year improvement over the 1911, compact, excellent grip that holds the recoil better than any other 45; same width as my 9mm Nano; smooth angles comfortable to wear concealed. First 50 rounds had two failure to feed. no problem with next 100 rds mixed ammo. M&P Shield fired hard ball and also match wad ammunition with no problem. This is important to me as my hard ball Colt will not auto load wad. Extremely accurate at 50 ft. This model has tritium sights that stand out brilliantly and to me well worth the additional $100. New magazines very stiff, hard to charge and needed to be broken in with light coat of lubricant. love it and cannot live without it...

I purchased the shield 45 with the factory night sights and 3 mags (#11726). I previously owned a shield 9mm which is pretty much the same gun except the 45 has a stipple-like grip (which makes a huge difference in my opinion) and is slightly larger. I personally like the extra bit of size it feels perfect in my hands...I have big palms. Only thing i didn\'t like is how difficult it is to load the magazines, on 1 of them i couldn\'t load more than 3 rounds and im not a weak guy. It has gotten better after loading and unloading them with a loading tool that I have for my Glock..but its still a little ridiculous. By the way the night sights are a all green 3 dot setup and are made by trijicon (I called Smith and Wesson before purchasing to ask) I haven\'t shot the gun yet so I can\'t speak on that...but I have no doubt it will be just as reliable as the shield 9 I had.
