I purchased this Savage Axis XP 308 back in January 2016. I've had no issues with this rifle at all. Accuracy right out of the box was great, just a few inches up and right, but got it zeroed in with no issue. Scope retains zero with no issues. Recoil, well it's a .308, not a .22LR, but definitely not a .50BMG either. It's a nice recoil. Ammo is a little pricey, but for a bolt action with 4+1, it's not unbearable. You're probably not going to be using this to clear rooms. As a starter to intermediate hunting rifle, it's great for it's intended purposes. You can really enjoy this rifle at the range as well. Like I mentioned earlier, there's not much kick so shooting from a prone or bench position is a breeze. Customization is very limited due to lack of aftermarket parts availability. But a bipod, sling, and a nice 10rd mag which can be found for about $95.00, will make this gun into a nice "tactical" rifle. I outfitted mine with a Voodoo Tactical cheek stock riser and ammo pouch from amazon.com, UTG combat bipod from amazon.com, and an OD green sling also from amazon.com and my rifle looks great. I'm saving up for a suppressor and barrel threading job though.

Very accurate rifle right out of the box. Scope was already sighted in and ready to go.

outstanding weapon! out of the box. no zero/BZO. 300+ meter shot in heart on female mule deer with thick brush. yes, i am the man! but this weapon did the work in this case. nothing bad to say about savage.

Bud's was great, but I had a hard time getting decent groups from this rifle. I was getting 3" groups at 100 yards, then I'd start hitting the target way off from the group. I get 1.5 inch groups with my Tikka .243. and I don't consider myself a great shooter. The scope that comes with the Savage Axis is very cheap and I think that is part of the problem. I wanted to put a picatinny rail on this rifle to mount one of my good scopes and I couldn't get the screws out that held the scope mounts that came with the rifle. I had to bring it to a gunsmith and have him drill out the screws That cost $80 plus I had the expense of a new rail. This turned into a huge project that wasn't really worth it. I had so much aggravation that I should have just bought another Tikka! Actually, I did eventually buy a Tikka in .308 -- from Bud's of course!
