I had a S&W Commander PD which was a very fine reliable pistol. I traded it and started collecting Kimbers and always missed the Smith. I had been looking at the new E series for a while and finally decided to take the plunge and don't regret it.
The pistol is beautiful and well made with great finish and fits nice and tight between the frame and slide. No rattles when you shake it just like my Kimbers and unlike my Colts. The Smith has a lot of features that usually are only found on high end guns, serrated top of slide, serrated back of slide and front of grip. Also an ambi safety, which as a lefty I really appreciate. The round butt grip is very comfortable in the hand and does conceal a little easier. I have a few Bobtail 1911's and like this style of grip alot.
Some people complain about the external extractor but I don't see it. It may not be the original 1911 design but it works great and that is what matters. This pistol has been 100% reliable so far and very accurate and see no reason for that to change. The only problem I have had with it is that my Wilson mags won't lock up in the grip, they seem to tall, but I have not figured out why. All other mags with metal followers instead of the Wilson plastic followers have worked fine, Colt, Chip McCormick, Kimber, etc. Since I have not figured out what the problem is, I don't know if it is a model wide problem or just this particular pistol. But not a big deal.
Anyway, my thoughts are that this is a very nice pistol and worth the money and a pleasure to look at and shoot.
By the way, Bud's has the Commander size PD back in stock at this time, which was discontinued in 2011. I don't know how they got them are where they came from but I already put mine on layaway and can't wait to get it. I have bought over 40 guns from Bud's over the years and have no complaints with their prices or service.
