This is an all-steel commander-length 45 ACP made in the Philippines by S.A.M. It is a cast frame and mim parts, but it is almost a faithful reproduction of a
spec Colt 1911 commander. Staked plunger tube and extractor. The finish is parkerized, and came packaged covered in oil in a heat-sealed bag in a cheap hard-plastic clamshell case. Out of the box, (after cleaning) it is 100% functional and even has a decent trigger. All safeties work, but the thumb safety is a bit stiff. That would probably have smoothed out on its own, but I polished it and shortened the plunger spring a coil and now it it perfect. The rcoil spring seems a bit weak, but that should be tuned to your load anyway. The grips are wood and damn ugly. The sights are fixed and GI style. Upgrading the sights to Novak or LPA will require milling the slide if you want good ones. It is a bare-bones military style 1911 in commander length and if that is what you want, here it is, but be cautious.
After a complete detail disassembly and inspection, I ended up replacing the disconnector, which was over polished and too short , and one of the grip screw bushings, which was boogerred upon installation. The M/S housing pin is mislocated slightly, but that has no consequence unless you want to change it, perhaps for one with a magwell.. Some of the parts seem a bit soft, but overall it seems to be a good start for a project gun as it is complete gun for the price of a bare frame from the standard suppliers like Caspian or STI.
For the price, this is an impressive buy. The quality is on par with Rock Island, which makes sense, but it is even cheaper. I plan on modding this gun extensively, including bobtailing the frame and flat-topping the slide. The quality of the metallurgy, and thus the lifespan of the piece remains to be seen.
Just a word of caution. If you are knowledgeable and familiar with 1911\'s, and you plan to completely go through this thing, you could use it as a carry piece. If you just want to have a 1911 for a range toy, it is OK, but it isn\'t as smooth and pretty as a higher-end gun. If you just think carrying a 1911 is cool, and aren\'t familiar and proficient with the system, don\'t get this.
