I bought this shotgun as a home defense weapon for my wife to use since it's a little more compact than the full sized model. It has been solid and dependable from the day we got it. Hard to go wrong with a Mossy.

One of the best home defense shotguns on the market. at a reasonable price. There are also plenty of upgrades you can add if so desired. Stocks, forend rails, etc. I chose this one as the stock that comes with it has a lop that is perfect for me.. I do not think you could find a better tactical shotgun in this price range .Mossberg makes a quality product.

I purchased the Mossberg simply because of the position of the safety and the shorter stock, some guys are Mossberg guys some Remington 870 guys, im a Mossberg 500 guy.I have pumped at least 150 rds of all makes and slugs/shot through this shotgun without any issues , Im very happy with this shotgun.I have purchased I think 7 weapons through Buds and have never had any problems. If you are looking for a well made affordable shotgun this is it. Thanks Buds.

Good gun, great service. Gun feeds and shoots reliably, however it is awfully light for full power loads, it will definitely punch your shoulder a bit.

This is a great shotgun at a great price, the short stock on this shotgun is a real asset especially in a close quarter situation. The 5+1 capacity is good, if you need more capacity pick another model. The weight is not excessive (6 3/4 lbs) which helps with handling, and the finish is a consistent flat blue, which I liked. This is a basic no frills defensive shotgun, again I would recommend the "short-stock" for the reason I mentioned -- buy with confidence -- Bud's was smart in finding this model - A+++++

Let me get this out of the way first.... Potential downside: the finish Is matte blue. While it looks nice (it looks a lot like Parkerizing), matte bluing is a budget-minded finish that is typically pretty weak when it comes to wear resistance and rust protection. You'll want to keep a protective film of oil on it if it will get exposed to moisture. For walking through the woods in the rain, it isn't great. For home defense (unless you keep it in the basement), it should be a minor issue at most. That said, it's right in the item description that the finish is matte blue, so this is not a dig and it didn't keep me from buying the shotgun (obviously), but I wanted to make sure that any prospective buyer reading this was aware to avoid any potential disappointment later. Now on to the review.... This shotgun is a non-cataloged model made for TALO (a distributor) to TALO's specifications. Other than maybe the finish (which is perhaps acceptable given its configuration as a home defense weapon AND which helps to keep this shotgun affordable), TALO nailed it. The shorter LOP buttstock (sometimes referred to as a "youth-length" buttstock) reflects the modern shotgun fighting stance wherein the shooter is squared-up to the target. The action tube assembly is the longer (7-5/8") action tube assembly. This is the length that Mossberg uses on its special purpose / tactical shotguns such as the 590 and 590A1 and is really nice since aftermarket railed forends (such as the Magpul MOE) and weaponlight forends (such as those made by SureFire) use this longer action tube assembly. If you bought a different 500 model with the standard (longer) buttstock and the sporting forend (which comes with either a 6-1/2" action tube assembly or a one-piece forend) and wanted to change out the parts, you'd be looking at $50 minimum (Hogue makes an adapter to lengthen the 6-1/2" action tube assembly) to a bit over $100 (if your shotgun came with the one-piece sporting forend). Somebody at TALO is pretty sharp! Other than the buttstock and action tube assembly, this is a typical 500. Function is fine, the action of mine is toward the smoother end, and the barrel shoots cheap buckshot (Rio 9-pellet 00 Buck) to point of aim in acceptable patterns (I've only shot it out to 50 feet). OVERALL A (if it was Parkerized or gloss blued it would have been an A )

This was my first purchase from Buds and even though I had to wait 2 weeks to pick it up, I can't be more pleased with this shotgun. Picked it up on Saturday and had it at my buddy's farm Sunday. I love the shorter stock. Very comfortable to shoot. Extremely pleased!

This was my first purchase from Bud's after being recommended to the site by a friend and I have to say I will be buying more soon. The 500 came in mint condition. I have a few modification that I will be doing later this year, but as is the shotgun has performed flawlessly. Great action, lighter than the 870 which was one of our deciding factors with the wife in mind, and very easy to handle. Have put a few boxes of shells through her and have had zero issues.

This was my first purchase from Bud's and the service was awesome! The shotgun was purchased for home defense with few modifications in mind. The blue finish is fine. It arrived with a small scratch on the center of the barrel, but nothing worth sending back over. The gun is simple to operate and does what it is supposed to. Recoil is what you expect with a 12-gauge shotgun. If you've handled shotguns before, this will be simple to operate. I highly recommend this for the price and quality. After 50 shells through it with no FTE's or FTF's, the gun runs smoothly.
