This is an L frame, which uses the same size grips as a K frame.
From small to large it's J,K,L,N,X (someone forgot N). Additionally, the governor series are denoted as a Z frame.
Hope this helps! -

It's an "L" frame ....I have two ,....two of my shooting buddies also have 686's. I'm assuming the guys saying "J frame" are making a joke. Hard to imagine anyone one this site could miss this at all ...much less two frame sizes off. FYI....from small to large it's a J,K,L,X . If your talking about the grip frame,...it appears to be a square frame. Although the new 686, 3-5-7 model is a round butt frame. With all the new grip shapes it can be hard to tell the shape of the frame....square or round.
