Using Visa with a limited amount (rebate)

I have a $50 Bud's gift card and a $40 Visa from a rebate. I know I can I use the gift card the system will automatically apply the $50 and require a second form of payment, I've done it before. What I don't know is will it process the Visa with the $40 limit properly. Some systems would try to charge the total balance and then fail because of the limit. Can I tell it charge only $40 then add a third form of payment? Or will it automatically charge the limit and ask for a third form of payment?
