How does double action work on a semi auto handgun, especially one with no hammer?

on a double action striker fired gun the striker is not all the way back in the cocked position and the trigger pulls the striker back before releasing it to strike the primer

Michael, it has to do with the "Trigger" Pull resetting the striker and releasing it all in the same trigger pull motion. A very detailed explanation here : youtube.com/watch?v=5_RoDAOQGnQ
