Depending on your budget... I'm in California and i do own the shield which i hand a 10rd mag for that extend the grip and it is very nice for my larger hands...i also have a glock 19 that is larger then a shield and thicker also fits nice even as a carry... any bigger then that i have a Beretta m9 that is larger but shoots like a dream stock or a glock 17....also the cz sp01 fits like a 1911 and is slimmer then the Beretta Beautifulgun... those choices are between 400 and 1000... anything above 1000 i would go with a sig 226 scorpion... hope this helps

Modern Double Action Only (DAO) semi-auto handguns, many following the Glock pattern, don't have a thumb safety (for many of us that was the whole point of the design). However some manufacturers, like Springfield, make a thumb safety model available because of the requirements issued by the State of California's firearms experts (among other juristictions). Just make sure your ultimate selection has one. To be fair some shooters prefer the thumb safety. Try to insure that whatever you get for your husband he TRAINS with it followed by PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...

The USP9 will be a good fit and they have Ca compliant. Also, I used to have the FNP9 and that worked very well. The 10rd California magazines weren't very expensive either.

The Canik TP's are phenomenal guns, made in Turkey where a rich history of quality gun manufacturing is pretty well known among gun enthusiasts. They come with several back straps and he can make the grip as fat as he wants. Glock snobs are irritated by folk calling it "the Glock killer", but it's that good a gun. I have one of the original TP 9's from when they were first imported and resembled (inside and out) a Walther P 99 and it's the only gun I own that has never, ever malfunctioned in any way, and because of the interchangeable back straps, fits my daughter's hand, who has since claimed possession of it.

I would recommend to take a look at a Walther CCP. Slightly larger frame, holds 8 rounds in magazine and because its a Walther it is ergonomically awesome. It is still concealable if that is a consideration and roughly same price. I own a couple of Shields, a Sig p365, a Hellcat and more and more I carry this Walther. As always, sound advice is go to a range and try it before you buy it. Hope this helped.

Just plant your M&P in a bucket of Black Cow and watch it grow. Harvest when it turns brown !

SIG M 17 , fits, shoots, handles well. I like the thumb safety. I have seen too many idiots mishandle a non thumb pistols.
It takes down easily for cleaning and maintenance. downside not a CCW carry due to size. but has night sights as standard
also fairly easy to fit optics on it. The US military picked it for a reason -

Again pick a brand A single stack 1911 in 45. Pick your own brand. Or a striker fired. Again pick a brand. Best to handle as many different guns as possible, and pick the one that feels best.

Depending on the grip angle you prefer, the Springfield Armory XD Series would work well. As would the Berretta 92 Series and the Glock 17. If you are looking for more weight, then the 1911 would be ideal.
I would recommend going to your local range and renting any of the above first. That way you will be able to see how it actually feels as far a recoil and length of pull for the trigger. Many ranges will let you "swap out" if you want to try multiple handguns for fit.
