Stephanie, as a rule of thumb, most standard handguns with a magazine capacity of 10 or less rounds, a weight of less than 50oz's (which is most standard handguns) will be New Jersey compliant : Details under Handguns here : budsgunshop.com/feeds/state_reg/new_jersey_restrictions.pdf

no list of NJ approved guns but they are legal as long as they are not banned under the following The following are prohibited: ✘Semi-automatic handguns that have the ability to accept a detachable magazine and at least two of the following features: 1. Magazine that attaches outside of the pistol grip 2. Threaded barrel 3. Barrel shroud
4. Manufactured weight of 50oz or more when the pistol is unloaded 5. Semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm

Magazine attaching outside the pistol grip is not very common, and is mostly in PDW's like pistol caliber carbines, and some AR style pistols
----
Threaded barrels mostly only come on tactical versions of pistols, so if you stick with standard versions your good.-------
A barrel shroud is an external covering that envelops (either partially or full-length) the barrel of a firearm, to prevent unwanted direct contact with the barrel, and again is more likely to be on a pdw, AR, or AK pistol
-------
Weight of 50 oz is pretty heavy, so any polymere and even most still frame pistols are gonna be good on that front really the other time a pistol is likely to exceed 3 pounds is a AR, AK, or PDW
-----
And the semi auto version of a full auto is more of the same, No MP5, No Ar, Ak Or PDW.
Then just make sure the magazine capacity is not above 10rds.
There are alot of pistols that will fit those qualifications, many offerings from Glock, SW, HK, CZ, Springfield, Ruger, walther and many others its really about deciding what the gun will be used for.
concealed cary, home deffense, target practice, etc...
And what caliber your interested in.
And then when you get your firearm get training.
If you find one and your not sure it qualifies for NJ, ask the Buds community, there's usually someone logged on who'd be willing to help ya out.

Bud's has a filter for CA, and MA compliant firearms they unfortunately don't have a filter for NJ.
But they do provide info on the restricted features of handguns in their state compliant section.
Here is the PDF containing the NJ state restrictions

/>And here is what is says about NJ handguns specifically

Stephanie, if the handgun has a 10 round capacity or less, it is most likely good to go in NJ. There are a few restrictions on semi-automatic hand guns, but most handguns would not have enough of those restrictions to be banned. You can check all the regulations here-- budsgunshop.com/feeds/state_reg/new_jersey_restrictions.pdf
