Yes this would be fine for a new shooter like yourself, there is some debate on whether or not 380 is an adequate cartridge for self defense, which if you get your marksmanship skills sharp any round will work (shot placement is more important then power of the round) that said I'd personally still go with a 9mm or if recoil is an issue because of the arthritis 22WMR can be a gnarly little round as well.
