I picked up this weapon from Bud’s. Had it sent to my FFL store and received it very quickly. As usual the price was very good and communication with the fine people at Bud’s was really great!!
The Springfield Armory Range Office Elite Champion is a nice weapon. It comes in a few variants but the one I am reviewing here is the P19137E. Chambered in 9mm with a 4 inch barrel and overall length of 7.6” it is light at about 31-32 ozs with an empty magazine. This weapon fits comfortably in your hands. I was skeptical at first about the G10 grips but going forward those are my new standard. They provide a very sure and comfortable feel in your hands. Dual safeties for right and left handed shooters area nice touch. White dot rear sights and fiber optic single front sights are standard on this weapon. After initial cleaning and oiling of the mechanism the weapon cycles smoothly. Fully loaded factory mags do however; take a sharp push to get into place. (See the comments on range time below.)
This piece was delivered with the usual Springfield Armory extras including: two 9 round 9mm mags, a range bag, lock, extra fiber optics in different colors, small allen wrench, take-down tool and a few other items and appropriate paper work. The range bag is perfect.
I took this weapon to my local gun club-range today and put 200 rounds through it with minimal issues. It handles well and had no problems with some FMJ 9mm bullets with a 115 grain load.
The only problem that I encountered is with the factory mags. They had a tendency to not chamber the initial round when reloading. I am not sure if this is just a new weapon, poor mags or something else. I tried loading the mags with only 6 or 8 rounds and that seemed to help. A full 9 round mag seems to be problematic. I did however bring along a Wilson Combat 10 round 9mm mag to test. This magazine performed flawlessly. I will keep working with the factory mags to see if they continue to have issues. But going forward I will replace all of them with the Wilson Combat mags. This weapon seems to like them and I like the extra capacity. It is not significant going from 9 to 10 rounds but it is still nice to have and the extension (slam-pad?) is nice as well.
Break-down and clean up of the weapon is pretty straight forward and similar to most all 1911 designs. Aligning the end of the slide stop with the small notch on the slide and pushing it through the frame is standard procedure. The guide rod has a small hole in it that requires the provided take-down tool to be inserted. Once the slide is removed you can remove the guide rod and spring assembly towards the rear (leave the take-down tool in place). From that point the barrel slips out to the front, as you would expect. All the usual cleaning techniques apply and reassembly is a simple reversal of the break-down process.
Overall, this is a very nice, well-constructed and smooth running handgun. Aside from the magazine issues (and those may resolve over time) this a really nice piece. It will become a favorite of mine and see a lot of range time along with my collection of 1911’s. (VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!)
