Savage Axis Overview

The Savage Axis is a Bolt action rifle commonly marketed before as the Savage Edge. While the Axis/Edge is entry-level rifle market, it still is a relatively impressive rifle, even though it lacks some of the bells and whistles of other guns. While everyone seems to want to value and shop firearms for the best deal, there are other thing that must be considered. The firearm is only a portion of the overall cost of ownership. There is so much more, like ammunition, optics, hunting tags, hunting trips and so forth. Sometimes the conquest can almost be as exciting as the victory of the purchase. One thing for sure, the dream of doing will never be greater than the memory of having done.



This rifle is available in 16 calibers, broadening its appeal. It comes in weighing in the 6.5+ pounds category when unloaded. The total overall length of 43.9 inches, with the barrel at 22 inches, and a rifling twist of 1:10 inches. The Savage Axis magazine is a mixture of a metal body and feed lips, anchored to a plastic base with built in magazine catch. Savage’s central feed magazines are fine, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the plastic magazine catch. The Axis rifle has a great futuristic synthetic stock, but lacks the “accu-trigger”, which is the benchmark of Savage’s success. On the other hand, any rifle that shoots like this, with this type of accuracy, has got to be at the front of the pack.



This could well rank among Savage's greatest low end rifle achievements. For all the young men and women who ever feared that they may never afford a new rifle that shoots inside an inch; for every parent who operates off a budget and had written off the idea of ever going shooting with their sons and daughters, the Axis has changed all that.
