Have you ever hear the phrase, “cute as a mouse”? The Sig Sauer P238 is all that, but with the right .380 ACP ammunition, it’s as lethal as a cobra. You’ve seen the popular Colt Mustang with virtually the same size design, but Sig Sauer absolutely outdid themselves on this little gun. First introduced in 2009, the P238 is beautifully designed little single action semiautomatic pistol. The P238 utilizes an aluminum frame and a stainless steel slide, and is accompanied by a skeletonized hammer. The P238 performs with a locked-breech short recoil operation. This little pistol has both a half cock and a thumb safety. The best way to carry the SIG P238 is in what is referred to as “condition one”, where the chamber is live, the hammer is cocked, and the thumb safety is on. When the pistol is in Condition one, all you have to do is point the pistol, flip off the safety, and pull the trigger.
The original Sig Sauer P238 was certainly a stylish handgun, with its matte black frame, solid wood grips, and stainless slide and small parts. In 2012, Sig Sauer introduced a number of variations in the finishes, including two-tone and totally stainless. The grips are available in a number of variations too, too numerous to list (and frankly I can’t recall them all). The P238 slide is equipped with a catch back when the magazine is emptied. There are vertical serrations on the front and back of the grip, as well as stippling on the wood stocks, for a safe hold while firing the pistol. The Sig Sauer P238 is a certainly compact pattern, and while it is moderately heavier, when compared with the polymer 380 pistols on the market, it is just as small.
