In competition shooting, there is first place and last place, and then there is somewhere in between. Shooting IPSC, in 21 round heats, is only done between two elements, you and the clock. The XDM will give you the first place edge, whether you are shooting in competition, or shooting in defense of your very life; missing with the Springfield XDM is very difficult to do.. Evidently, even the toughest critics must have thought that the XDM was something special. How else can you explain that it received the prestigious honor in 2009 of being, “Handgun of the Year”?
The XDM is very much all of the perks that you will find in the XD, only with a few more. Of course the “match grade” barrel and trigger have to be at the very top of the list. Without that, this pistol would be like a Corvette with a straight six cylinder motor. The XDM is a “comp ready” pistol and should not be viewed as anything else, but. Other things that help distinguish this pistol apart from other “Johnny come lately’s” is Melonite or Niride coating for durability, and there is also an ambidextrous magazine release, but then there are the different configurations and finishes, too.
If you want to read about all of the existing components that are used in both the XD and XDM models, then the review on the XD should help you pretty well complete your quest. If after all that, you still decide not to go with the XDM, you are probably going to end up “the bridesmaid and never the bride”. In other words you are going to be filled with regret, the “Wow, I could have had a V8” syndrome.
THe XDM is available in several sizes. The Compact, Standard, Full, and Comp models. Overall lengths range from 6.25-8.3 inches. The weights are from 25 up to 32 ounces. Height is 4.5 to 5.75 inches without the extension clip. Barrel lengths are 3.8/4.5/5.25 inches. The trigger is very clean and breaks over evenly around the 5.5 pound mark. The magazine capacities are as follows: Compact 9mm (13+1), .40S&W (11+1), and the .45ACP (9+1). For the full and competition size models, 9mm (19+1), .40S&W (16+1), and for the .45ACP (13+1).
