Yes you can change out the handguard. The UPC 819644022916 for this rifle is a rifle that's been updated, buds is using an old picture. It now comes with a better "free float" handguard. Hi, The lower receiver is a metal reinforced polymer. There is no finish as it is a polymer part. I hope this helps.
