Are these rounds loose in the box?

In a plastic bag. Not 20 round boxes.

The packaging says "range pack" but I hear that this ammo cannot be used on most indoor ranges cause of the damage it would cause. I'm a bit confused? Is this range ammo or self defense?

Hi Damon, it is range ammo, but it is green tip so most indoor ranges don't allow it. This popular 5.56 cartridge is also sometimes referred to as a “penetrator round” due to its 62-grain projectile, partially steel core, and enhanced ability to punch through hard targets. Green tip ammo can do a lot of damage at indoor shooting ranges that rely on steel. Not only could this ammo penetrate the steel and possibly continue traveling along its path of trajectory, but it would also do a lot of damage to backdrops, requiring that they be replaced. Most indoor ranges will not allow green tip mmo. outdoor ranges I have never had an issue

Jean, this bullet weight will work well in either 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 Twist Rate Barrels. 1 in 9 is no issue as well. Cheers and stay safe!

Jean, for 62 grain 1:8 twist would be best. Normally 1:9 twist is 40-55 grain, 1:8 twist is 55-68 grain, and 1:7 twist is 68-75 grain. With that said I have a 1:9 twist that shoot Hornady 73 grain eld match ammo quite well. So don't be scared to try different weights in any twist ratio. Hope this helps.

I bought 2 of these 500 round boxes of Winchester M855's and loaded on stripper clips and stored them in .50 caliber ammo cans. Great deal with the manufacturers rebate Winchester was offering at the time. My only regret is that I didn't stockpile more of it while the prices were low. Great ammo if you can find it.
