Back in the heyday of the TV Western, Steve McQueen, the star of "Wanted: Dead or Alive," rode across black-and-white screens toting a sidearm like nothing any lawman or outlaw had carried before. A cut-down, modified version of repeating rifle, this recognizable shootin’ iron could be holstered like a pistol but fired with the speed of lever-action rifle. Nicknamed the Mare’s Leg, this innovative weapon swiftly brought outlaws to justice every week and rose to fame as the real star of the short-lived show. Now fans of those classic Westerns and collectors of innovative firearms can holster a replica of that famous made-for-TV sidearm.

I was considering this one for a long time. When I looked it over it was generally in good condition in terms Fit and finish except for a small scratch in the forward grip And looks like a very small chip in the finish. I waited so long to get it I%u2019m not about so send it back for that but this is my third Henry and they should be more careful in the NJ. I do like this one and all my others overall. It%u2019s still a work of art.

I wasn't sure about the performance of such a gun until I put a couple hundred rounds thru it, and now I know this weapon is a short range sniper rifle. This Henry isn't for everyone, and it certainly is no first gun, but if you are looking for an accurate 25-80+ yard to back up your cc, this little repeater will deliver 6, .357 mag rounds consistently on target every time. Once I figured out the best way to handle it, I started consistently hitting a 3" spread at 25 yards in a free-standing position with 158g FMJ range ammo. Tactical single round reload is easy, but I would say this gun is all about that accurate kill shot up to 100 yards. Boar hunters love it for all the same reasons that it makes a practical self-defense back-up: reliability, accuracy, and power. Perfect choice for responsible gun owners who aren't interested in spraying their target with unnecessary rounds.

I have wanted this firearm for 3 decades. I have seen it on several TV Shows over the last 50 years [Wanted Dead or Alive, Fire Fly and Zombie Land] and expect it will be used on more in the future. Henry has a reputation for manufacturing quality products and standing by its Lifetime Warranty. I am very pleased with the purchase.

Very pretty but for shooting offhand i found it to be too heavy. I also had issues with reliable extraction unless i really worked the action.

I already had the mare's leg .22lr. After a spinal infection and over a dozen surgeries, I can't bend properly to operate any rifle. However, I can shoot the mare's leg just fine two-handed and on that little one, one-handed. This .357 is a whole 'nother ballgame with that. It's quite substantial! I won't be shooting it much one-handed, but the weight is great for the .357mag cartridge, with quite low recoil. The posture is the same as with the small frame model. Being a Henry, of course the finish is jewel-like and the lever action is smooth as butter. I know that it'll accept some .38spl cartridges, but I doubt I'll ever shoot those, as I have other guns for that. I sure wish I could still shoot Henry rifles, but this mare's leg is amazing. It's already gotten a couple of hundred rounds through it on the indoor range and it seems to be quieter than my .357 revolver there, I guess because of the action. I would recommend that if anyone has a question about handing the weight of this, practice holding the equivalent weight in books, weights or something to see whether it's too much. I'm no strongman, but it's fine for me. And, as usual, Bud's service is perfect for me.

The finish and functioning of this gun are superb. Beautiful piece. Takes some practice though to shoot with one or two arms, since it's not easy to shoulder it.

My Henry Mares Leg in .357 Mag is one of the finest firearms that I own. It is a wonderful addition to my collection of Henry firearms. One of the amazing things is that the BATF considers it a pistol. The beautiful walnut stock and the brass receiver make it a beautiful firearm.
