A fine revolver in all respects. My first Smith was a K frame 38 with 6 inch barrel. An accurate work horse; I wish I still owned it. Next a 5 inch Model 27 that Skeeter Skeleton said was ideal. But a heavy beast. A 3inch 66, almost perfect. And many others. This new 586 4inch functions flawlessly, more accurate than me, as well finished and blued as any Smith I’ve seen, but a bit heavy for carry. I could care less about the little lock hole. The grips, for me, are better than any wood I’ve had on a factory Smith. I recommend; it’s a keeper.

The classic model 586 is similar in dimensions and weight to the earlier original 586's. The barrel on the new gun appears slightly thicker than the originals and the cylinder walls appear slightly thinner, but metallurgy has come a long way in 40 years. The trigger action is smooth and even throughout. The barrel appears to be a one piece barrel, unlike the barrel shroud and stainless insert seen in the classic model 19. Also, the barrel length is 4", not 4 1/4. The gun appears to be as solid as the original guns and locks tight. The weight effectively dampens recoil of the .357 rounds. The grips while nice, are slightly thinner than on the original guns, and the earlier target grips seem to absorb recoil slightly better, but that is a matter of personal preference. The bluing is nice, but not at the same level of polish as on the original guns. I would compare the bluing on these classic models to that of the early Model 28, which had a less polished finish for sale to the police, but was otherwise a Model 27. Unfortunately, the classic series does include the safety lock hole, but it is not as noticeable on a blued gun. For comparison, the closest competitor to the classic 586 as a reborn classic, would be the newly issued blued version of the 4 1/4" Python. The new Python is inside of an ounce within the weight of the 586, and has a similar feel, but the trigger does stack a bit on the Python. Both have adjustable sights, but the 586 has a white outline, and does not require an L wrench to loosen the rear sight for windage, unlike the Python. Both have red front sight inserts. The bluing is more highly polished on the Python, but aside from the ascetics, both guns perform similarly. Given the price difference, strictly for shooting, the 586 classic is still a great looking gun, and appears as sturdy as any standard L frame Smith.

First, my thanks to Bud’s Gun Shop, for sending this firearm in a timely manner. Secondly, this weapon is a beauty, to my eyes. Having this revolver has brought back great memories, when I was still a police officer. But I don’t remember this revolver being the heavy. Oh well. It’s still a great weapon to have. Need to get to a firing range to see how it shoots. You’ll have no regrets buying this piece.

One sweet shooter. Fit and finish is the best I've ever seen on a revolver. As far as the key lock goes you'll forget about it in 5 minutes. The revolver feels great in my hand. And right out of the box at 65 ft I was hitting a Target the size of a silver dollar.

Love this firearm! Always wanted the classic revolver and this 586 did not disappoint. I have had this handgun for several.years now and had absolutely no mechanical issues with it. I'd give the blueing about an 8 out of 10 due to some discoloration after about 1,000 rounds through it and all of the cleanings but it's never been holstered so the color should still be consistent. The stocks are beautiful, it points easily, the orange front site is easy to see and its hefty enough to comfortably shoot both .38's and .357. If you're looking at it and thinking it's a beautiful handgun, go ahead and order it, you won't be disappointed. Great transaction with Buds as always.

When I ran across this Smith & Wesson 586 4” .357 mag revolver on Budsgunshop I knew I was going to buy it. What a beauty! When I received it and held this blue steel version in my hands, I was very impressed. Taking it to the pistol range the first time and firing it was everything I imagined. The sites were right on. Using .357 mag ammo was quite accurate and the recoil was not the least bit uncomfortable. Firing .38 Special ammo was even more accurate. I may use .38 Special +P ammo in it all the time, and I like having the option to use either. It looks good in the holster I got for it, and I expect to be taking it to the range soon for more fun. I can’t say enough about how sweet this pistol looks. For my first revolver, it’s a winner!
