Hornady .17 HMR 20 Grain Extreme Terminal Performance 50rd box - Brass Casing

Shoots accurate out of my Savage A17. Pull the trigger and they go bang. I plan on using this ammo for predator hunting.

Earlier this year I purchased a Savage 93R17 GV. I'm in the process of trying different 17HMR ammo. I wanted to try the Hornady 20gr XTP because the Savage owners manual says that is what Savage uses to test their 17 HMR rifles. To get a first cut estimate of accuracy I normally shoot 10 groups of three rounds from the bench on a 75 yard range, and measure the distance in mm between the center round and the other two and calculate the average deviation. I shot 12 groups of 3 rounds with the Hornady 17HMR 20gr XTP ammo on Aug. 2, 2021. The mean for the 12 groups was 17.8 mm and the sample standard deviation was 5.98 mm. For comparison purposes the mean for my test of CCI 17HMR 17gr V-Max was 12.5 mm, and for CCI 17HMR 17gr TNT JHP was 13.7 mm. For those familiar with statistical tests, the one tailed t-test between means for the CCI 17 gr TNT JHP and the Hornady 20gr XTP was significant at 10% level. However, it was windy on the day I tested the Hornady 20 gr. XTP so my results may not be typical for this ammo. I am going to test it again on a calmer day. If the results are significantly different I'll update this review. On the plus side, the average mean deviation, 17.8 mm, is still less than one MOA at 75 yards. That accuracy plus the heavier bullet weight should make it an effective varmint round to 100 yards.

I bought my first 17hmr savage last year. I'm 71. Better late than never. HORNADY 17 HMR 20 grain knocked the heck out of the ground squirrels. No problem here. Thanks.

These 20 grain bullets shoot much tighter groups, at least in my rifle, than do the more popular 17 grain bullets - give them a try.

The most accurate ammo for my Savage 110 PRC. About 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. For hunting, this round absolutely does it right. Flys flat but also hits hard. On smaller animals it seems to overexpand a little. On a larger woodchuck I got, it was an instant humane kill. No over expansion and no exit wound on a 5 inch thick section of meat.

The 20 gr.17 cal.xtp is a great cartridge for small game. Fun for targets also.s

Shoot this in my CZ455, started out with groups just about 1 inch maybe at 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards.
Same with the Hornady 17 grain. Got a Lilja barrel. If I do my part I'm shooting 1/2 - 3/4 inch groups.
As in previous reviews I'm just an average shooter.
