  Josh, yes it will work. It is for the Ruger American Short Action (calibers: 308 WIN, 6.5 Creedmoor). This Heatseeker model for the Ruger American is compatible with AICS short action magazines from Magpul and Accuracy International. The Magpul version is recommended.   Dionagelo, This is a super bolt action rifle. has nice features and accurate. If you are a new shooter you might want to look at a 7.62 or 308 caliber. Love the 6.5 CRD round. Have several, but if just starting 6.5 is expensive. 7.62 or 308 less expensive, accurate to several hundred yards, great for hunting. You would be happy with this specific firearm as a beginning shooter if you can afford rounds to get good with it. Takes about 200 rounds to season barrel and get good with the rifle.

  If you are going on a "once in a lifetime" hunt you should use at least a 300 magnum of some sort. Light calibers like the 6.5 Creedmoor would mean you may have to pass up a shot on a once in a lifetime bull that you could take with something with enough power to penetrate to the vitals on a less than ideal shot angle.
