We all grew up hearing the phrase, "Faster than a speeding bullet...," but not when it is fired from Smith & Wesson's new Model 460XVR, with the highest muzzle velocity of any production revolver on earth. The Model 460XVR is so revolutionary that it required an entirely new designation...XVR, X-treme Velocity Revolver.

Starting with their Extra Large Frame, the Smith & Wesson engineers worked to deliver maximum velocity - over 2,300 feet per second - to reach the target faster than ever before. The 460XVR™ has interchangeable compensators to accommodate every load and its "gain-twist" rifled barrel means superb long-range accuracy (beyond 200 yards) with every shot! Only Smith & Wesson could deliver this much power, this much velocity and this much accuracy in a precision, production revolver.

Thanks Buds. You had the best price on this hand cannon! The .460 is a beautiful and fine handcuffed revolver. I cannot think of one bad thing to say about it.

Okay...let's clear up some facts. The 460XVR came after the 500 series and S&W managed to find a way to make it better than the already fabulous .500 S&W Magnum! The XVR uses "gain twist" rifling that allows the bullet "time" to spin up to final rotation which enhances accuracy...NOT found on the .500. The .460 S&W Magnum sits atop all other .45 caliber "magnum" level rounds. It beats the already powerful .454 Casull by a solid margin, yet does so in a platform that is superior to all that have come before. The 460XVR can launch light slugs at genuine rifle velocity - and when I say "light" I mean light for the .45 caliber...a 200 or 220 grain bullet bursting into the world at 2200-2300 feet per second will deliver a brutal terminal effect on all things living, but will do so with a trajectory that is truly rifle-like which means 200 meter shots are easy. Add a scope and the 460XVR can easily substitute for a rifle in bush country. At the other end of the scale it can also launch 300 grain, and somewhat heavier slugs at speeds generating upwards of 2100-2500 lb-ft of Kinetic energy which bring is very close to the .500 S&W, but the .500 will always eclipse the .460 as loads are pushed to the limit.
This model - the 8-3/8" barrel is the "real deal" in every way. Balance is surprisingly good for such a large revolver. It's a bit much for the average person to mount one-handed and hold steady, however a solid two-hand hold is is possible for anyone seriously interested in shooting the big gun well. The action is S&W SMOOOTH! GLASS smooth! DA pull through rolls through like the parts have bearings between contact surfaces, and single action is no more than a thought! I have the .500 S&W in 6.5" and 4" and both have the same level of action refinement which indicates the same level of quality across the entire platform. Much is hyped about the blast of the .460%uFFFDyes it has a blast, but nothing a simple pair of foam earplugs can%uFFFD%uFFFDt isolate out when shooting in the open. The reason of course is the large vent style compensator that %uFFFD%uFFFDdirects%uFFFD%uFFFD sound into the ear. As a comparison the 6.5%uFFFD%uFFFD .500 does NOT have the same blast signature and is very comfortable to shoot without ear protection when out in the open. As delivered the gun is fully functioning, timing is perfect, all metal parts interact smoothly.
As for the notion that the 460 and 500 have no practical value I must say %uFFFD%uFFFDBS!%uFFFD%uFFFD Thanks to EFFECTIVE muzzle porting these beasts are EASY to shoot! FAR easier on the hands, wrists, and arms than the much lighter, non-compensated, overload magnums built by other companies! Having no less than THREE of the big magnums I feel %uFFFD%uFFFDqualified%uFFFD%uFFFD to opine that the gun(s) are VERY usable in the field and since they eclipse all other factory calibers, imminently %uFFFD%uFFFDpractical.%uFFFD%uFFFD I%uFFFD%uFFFDve done rapid fire, double-action shot-strings from the XVR and my 4%uFFFD%uFFFD 500 and found both easy to control for the initial shot and all follow-ups. Those of you out there hesitating to jump into the BIG END of the magnum pool need not worry%uFFFDthe .460XVR and it%uFFFD%uFFFDs .500 brethren have LESS violent, whipping, torquing, %uFFFD%uFFFDkick%uFFFD%uFFFD than any M29 with top loads, and FAR less than any Ruger SB with top loads. With the heaviest loads the gun does kick straight back into the palm%uFFFDall the videos you see where some woman takes a hit to the forehead please note they are shot by misogynistic individuals who think it%uFFFD%uFFFDs %uFFFD%uFFFDfunny%uFFFD%uFFFD to hand an unsuspecting person who is unfamiliar with handguns, a top-loaded X frame and laughing as they see the ineffective hold and lack of proper shooting technique that leads to such overblown outcomes. In reality, a knowledgeable shooter, accustomed to shooting magnum revolvers will indeed find the X frames far more %uFFFD%uFFFDtame%uFFFD%uFFFD to shoot than other .44 and .45 %uFFFD%uFFFDmagnums with their top loads. The .460 S&W is capable of shooting mild .45 Colt loads all the way up to maximum .460 S&W loads. With an inexpensive Moon clip conversion it can also shoot the .45 ACP if one so desires. Despite ignorant negative comments questioning why anyone would %uFFFD%uFFFDneed%uFFFD%uFFFD speedloaders or moon clips for such a large pistol, the reality is, both make it even better than it is! Speed loaders eliminate fumbling with such big cartridges, and moon clips go one better by making loading or reloading VERY fast, and extraction of empties VERY positive since the empties are locked into the clip and thus the ejector star can NOT jam over a rim if the user fails to tip the muzzle upward during extraction.
If you only intend to own ONE X frame%uFFFDthe .460 is probably the %uFFFD%uFFFDone.%uFFFD%uFFFD
Bud%uFFFD%uFFFDs as usual has excellent prices, a convenient lay-away that makes it possible to purchase expensive guns, and an overall smooth buying experience%uFFFD
