I believe this is the best Blackhawk, design wise, that Ruger has ever made.
For a working gun, the New Model lockwork allows safe carry of a full cylinder of six rounds, definitely an advantage.
The grip frame and ejector rod housing are all steel.
The flat top frame features a nice Micro branded fully adjustable rear sight.
This revolver is made on the smaller .357 sized frame, not the larger .44 mag sized frame. Handling qualities are fast and sure.
I mic'd the cylinder throats on my revolver and they were all perfect at .430. This gun is accurate, especially with Buffalo Bore's "Outdoorsman" .44 Special ammunition.
The loading gate features the indexing pall that perfectly aligns the cylinder with the ejector rod at each "click". This is a must have feature in my opinion.
Cosmetically, the fit of the grip frame to frame is perfect, fully the equal of my 1st gen Colt SAA. Obviously, they are finish ground together. This is flat out amazing worksmanship at this price point.
The blueing is good, a dark matte blue.
The fit of the plastic grips to the grip frame could be a little better, but is certainly acceptable.
My only gripe is there is a small pit-like void in the right side of the top strap that wasnt polished out. About the size of a grain of salt. I suspect Ruger has limits to how deep their polishers can "chase" such a pit. They must allow for such occasional small blemishes. For this i deducted one star, for the finish would have been nearly perfect if it could have been polished out.
The revolver is otherwise so good that i am willing to overlook this small blemish. A couple of camping trips and i'll never notice it t.

I received this revolver exactly five business days after placing my order, which was faster than I expected since it was ordered in the second week of December. My Ruger New Model Black Hawk 44 special is a well built very accurate revolver and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys shooting single action revolvers. When I say accurate, I mean that I, a 70 year old man with poor eyesight, can consistently place 4 out of 6 rounds in the x ring of a standard 25 yard pistol target at 50 feet off hand. This is not just once in awhile, but most all of the time. So, with respect to quality of construction function and accuracy, I don't see how it could be any better Cosmetically, it has some minor issues. There are three small (about the size of a grain of salt) blemishes in the blueing. Two on the back strap and one on the loading gate and there were (gone now) some sharp edges on the hammer spur and the trigger guard, nothing that a few minutes with a small file and some cold blue couldn't fix. I wouldn't mention these at all except that I want this to as accurate an assessment as I can make it.

This is a typical Blackhawk, but in the less common .44 spl. Fit and finish are good and I have no concerns at all. I am looking forward to shooting this one!

Great service, great gun at a good price, am very happy with my purchase of my Lipsey's Ruger .44 Special. Fit and finish of the firearm was excellent. Shooting Skeeter's loads are accurate and sufficiently powerful for deter and two or four footed aggressorl muy pronto!

The .44 Special Blackhawk Flat Top arrived in perfect shape from Bud's. After firing the very first round of standard 240 gr SWC ammo, the revolver locked up. I discovered the base pin had slipped past the base pin latch under recoil. This caused the transfer bar NOT to be pushed away from the frame during cocking, which resulted in the transfer bar jamming into the bottom of the firing pin. I reset the base pin making sure the base pin latch was in place, cocked and fired again. It locked up again. That was on a Saturday so called Ruger customer service on following Monday morning. The e-mailed a prepaid return FedEx 2nd Day label and the Blackhawk was on its way back to Ruger that afternoon. I received it back from Ruger exactly 10 days late with a work order stating "base pin latch repaired, test fired, cleaned and lubricated." I have now been back to the range twice and fired a total of 112 rounds. The Blackhawk has functioned flawlessly and is very accurate. Five stars, less one for having to send it back to the factory.
