Iv carried this gun for awhile now as an edc and its awesome small enough to conceal but fills the hand and has a long enough barrel to reach out a little

I'm a previous and current Kahr pistol owner. I took the plunge on the P380 because it was at the time the only small, lightweight .380 available in California - at a premium price! It proved to be an experience to say the least. As reported by many, it came out of the box malfunctioning as if it had been created just to vex me personally! But I took a look at it and quickly discovered the entire problem centered around the extractor being under too much tension! The extractor was so tight the little slide simply couldn't generate enough closing force to get the cartridge rim up under it, so the gun would jam constantly, and when it did chamber, it would as often fail to "clear" the empty due to the same problem - too tight extractor not letting the rim go! Well, a couple of clipped coils later and the gun went from jam-o-matic to SUPERB SHOOTER! There was nothing wrong with the gun's design, simply Kahr's eagerness to insure every gum comes with stout springs - that's whey they tell you to bust a LOT of caps before calling! They know that the parts need to wear in and springs which start out too tight end up just right! So, I started to put a lot of study into the Kahr design and decided in many ways it's far superior to Glock. In fact, if Kahr ever decides to move into double-stack frames they just might be the only real competition Glock's ever had!
So on to this gun - the KP4040. What's to great about it? Well, as indicated by the "K" it's part of Kahr's premium series with the fancy laser markings and dovetail sights. IMO Kahr does stainless steel as well as anyone in the business, and better than most. This gun is smaller than .380s just a few decades ago - lighter too. It's barely over 6" long and 4.5" high, and a bit over 9/10ths of an inch thick, and under a pound in weight sans its all-stainless steel, high-quality magazine. To put this in perspective, it's approximately the same size as Glock's Model 43 subcompact, single-stack, 6 round 9mm! The KP40 also holds 6 1, except that's seven rounds of .40 caliber goodness instead of 9mm. You have to be impressed when Glock's smallest effort to date is no smaller than Kahr's "mid-size" .40 caliber!
As expected the gun functions cleanly out of the box. The "box" included two six round mags and a single seven round mag ($40 value-add) for a total of 8-shots on tap - not bad at all! The magazine release button is a bit small by current standards of making everything oversized, but that's really how it should be on a gun built for concealment. As such it takes a good push, but also those Kahr initial spring rates are working to hold the mag in! So it's a good thing! The slide-stop is Kahr's one concession to "oversize" and it's been that way since the beginning. As a result, with the Kahr you CAN release the slide using the slide stop without worry that anything can be bent, or torsed, or twisted. The slide stop is a massive piece of CNC machined steel - as is the slide, and other steel parts. The polymer fame weighs nothing. The cam-action trigger is the best compact carry trigger bar none. Like Glock the striker is partially retracted during slide movement, and the cam is rotated "backward" when the trigger is pulled, until it releases the striker sear. At the same time a protrusion on the cam also depresses the striker release button located inside the slide. The pistol cannot accidentally fire by any non-magical means. The best way to learn to shoot a Kahr is to index the crease of the right trigger finger against the right side of the trigger. This allows the finger to sort of "wrap around" the trigger as it's pulled rather than trying to press straight back...it's conducive to better accuracy as well.
While Kahr has a bit of a reputation for spotty function out of the box, any problem with feeding and extraction is traceable directly to that large extractor. If tension is too tight, the gun will jam and fail to clear. If tension is too loose, the gun will fail to fully extract empties, leaving them laying in the chamber. It's and easy fix that even a novice can carry out once they understand it. Kahr sells every part for every gun they build on their website which means you can have all the spare springs and things you'll ever need.
Every time I handle one of my Kahr pistols I ask myself why I haven't bought another one.

ordered on tuesday and at my FFL on friday..im in california so for those that want to know it came with a hard locking case 2 6rd magazines and one 7rd..im very pleased with this gun no problems

A Kahr P40 for $279 with 3 magazines and original case is an absolute steal, there was no way I was gonna pass up a deal like this, my FFL in Glendale California was in shock that a premium Kahr firearm was priced at $279 these guns run for $600 plus easy at most dealers around here. I took the firearm to the range put 300 rounds of different types of ammo it ran flawlessly, all magazines worked fine, firearm function exactly how it’s supposed to, many complain about the double action trigger but personally I loved it all groups were tight and that’s really good for the size of the pistol shooting 40S&W, the recoil is very manageable, the only thing I didn’t care for is how stiff the slide is to chamber a round, that might be a problem for someone with a weak hand strength other than that I love this new EDC pistol, anyone looking for a very inexpensive premium firearm should scoop these up before BudsGunShop changes their mind about the price lol, Buds is the best online store I’ve ever shopped with and plan to be loyal customer for a long time.

Truly a pocketable .40 S&W powerhouse. I picked up one of these guns cause the price was super affordable. I knew they came with 3 mags. The gun is so light it’s funny, although torching off a .40 caliber bullet will definitely hurt. The craftsmanship is there and it’s very tight when i first got it. Of note Kahr advises a 200 round break in and using the slide stop vs slingshotting it. The DAO trigger takes some adjusting to but it’s predictable and smooth. You know exactly where it’s going to break and go boom. Shooting full power .40 loads is no picnic and the P40 lets you know it. About 100 is all I could manage before pain forced me to quit. It’s definitely intended to be carried a lot and shot very seldom. Also it uses an unusual method of steel rails to ride on. It’s got the customary steel inserts at the rear only. Front duties are done by a separate steel subframe with 2 grooves that the front of the slide rides in ( this feature is absent in the K series Kahrs) the polymer rails are to assist in assembly only. The barrel is unusual too. It’s got polygonal rifling and is made to match grade specs by lotar Walther ( don’t think they are part of Walther proper). The springs are still tight but mine racks easy now. Kahr guns are very solid providing your willing to put in the effort to get good. Even the NYPD was allowing them as back up/off duty weapons from 1998 to 2011. If you gotta have a .40 and it’s gotta fit in your pocket look no farther, you’ve found your gun

I picked this up yesterday, cleaned it, and took it to the range with several brands of ammo and hand loads. Fit and finish on this P model is better than on the CM model I bought previously. Also the trigger is a little better. The pull seems lighter and creep is hard to find. Recoil seems quite tolerable for a small light pistol in this caliber. It has to be recoiling more than my Glock 22, but it seems less. Jumps around more but doesn't sting the web of my hand. I had FTF malfunctions with most of the ammo used. About one out of every 12 to 15 failing to chamber completely. I only put 120 rounds through it so hopefully it will loosen up enough to function eventually. After a similar start my CM9 got to where it will handle any reasonably decent ammo. Also, the front edge of the guide rod was so sharp that re-assembly was not easy. A few minutes of spinning it between my fingers against a sharpening stone to smooth the sharp shoulder made a huge difference. I may come to love it for this 276.00 price, but for now 3 stars.

This is an excellent back up gun that has supreme machining with a unique proven design at half the MSRP cost. Get one while you can! As always buds gun shop was helpful with top flight service!
