Introduced by the U.S. Army in 1873, this cartridge was first known as the .45 Government. As it made its way into commercially produced firearms the name .45-70 appeared, because it was loaded with a 70 grain blackpowder charge with 405 and 500 grain bullets. Virtually all rifle making companies of the late 19th century chambered their single shots and lever actions for the .45-70. As those companies and their rifles faded away, the .45-70's popularity did not. Factory .45-70 ammunition has been cataloged continuously since 1873 but never in the variety of loadings available now, in the 21st century. They range from 405 grain lead bullet, low-velocity loads for deer hunting and target shooting to high-velocity 300 to 400 grain jacketed bullet ones meant for large game. The Model H010 .45-70 can handle them all. Its receiver is blued steel fitted with an 18.43" round barrel underneath and a tubular magazine of four-round capacity. Its pistol-grip buttstock and steel-capped forend are crafted of beautiful American walnut and cut with checkering to provide a sure grip. The buttstock wears a soft rubber pad to help shooters handle .45-70 recoil from a 7.08 lb. rifle. The model H010 will be factory issued with XS Ghost Ring rear peep sight with blade front. Because the receiver is drilled and tapped, scope mounting is an easy option.

I love this rifle! Great quality and very nice shooting. I have been working up some 405 gr loads for bear and it will thump you in the shoulder with the heavy loads but it always brings a smile too my face. Some prefer the loading gate on their levers but the loading tube works fine for me. Bud's did a great job as usual.

So here is my take on the Henry 45-70. I own three other Henrys and I have to say that I"m a bit disappointed in this one. I purchased this due to the fact that the new Marlins are sketchy at best and the Uberti is a little rich for my blood. The stock and the forearm finish is OK but not great, the checkering is not well done, the finish on the receiver is poor and does not go with the rest of the weapon. The receiver has a parkerized feel while the lever, the barrel and the magazine tube have a smooth blued finish. I'm not a fan of the magazine tube with the sliding plunger. To me it feels cheap, I have the same issue with my .45 LC big boy. The action is not as smooth as my other Henrys. The front sight and barrel band assembly is terrible. It has the same cast barrel band as my Henry .22, just larger. Again this makes what should be a beautiful rifle feel cheap. One thing I am impressed by is the rear sight. I purchased a Skinner sight to accomplish the same thing on my big boy.

Purchased this Henry H010 45-70 from Buds earlier this year. Finally had one in stock. Beautiful rifle. Nice firing. Just purchased the new Henry H011 44-40 Original. It is night and day in a category above the fit and finish of ANY Henry rifle I have ever seen. Beautiful walnut and brass. Best of all made in America. This was my 15th weapon purchased from Buds.

So far a great gun with its quality and feel. Looking forward to fireing it and fits in quite well with my other 3 Henrys. It does have a very tight lock up, I assume for handling such a powerfull round. But the rest of the action is smooth. Great service from Buds. Thanks.
