My favorite 1911. more reliable and more predictable than the finicky Kimbers imho. Has a break in period like any other 1911 where you may experience one jam per box of 100 rounds. this is to be expected in any 1911 in the first few hundred rounds. it is after this break in period of 200-300 rounds that we see 1911's come into their own for reliability. with this gun, after 200-300 rounds you are looking at extreme reliability with this Springfield mil spec, I shoot 1500 rounds a year through it. I clean it once every six months, if that. I think at one point I went 1.5 years without a cleaning. And despite that, not a single failure (after the first couple hundred rounds) Right now, it has not been cleaned for about 500 rounds and i cant get it to jam no matter how hard i try. I load up both the stock springfield 7 round magazines and some Wilson-Combat 8 round magazines and then I fire in rapid succession trying to make it jam. Not a hiccup. I am really impressed guys. I can't make her jam. And I am not even using quality brass FMJ's. those cycle fine! But when I do my torture tests, I alternate between magazines of hollow points and wolf steel FMJ's. this mil spec eats it all without issue. For a 1911 to cycle JHP's and cheap steel-case russian FMJ's all without a single jam is highly impressive. Try that with a Kimber... hah! 1911's were designed for neither steel case nor JHP's. this springfield mil-spec 1911 is a steal-of-a-deal 1911 and it puts more expensive 1911's to shame.

Springfield Armory 1911A1 Mil Spec .45 ACP 5” SS with two 7 round magazines. It came with plastic holster and double mag pouch, owner’s manual, Nylon barrel brush, 2 ILS keys, a small piece of round bar steel, bent at 90 deg. for assisting removal of the main spring housing and a small Allen Wrench. All this was neatly packed in a nice blue plastic carrying case with a loop for adding a lock.

Upon receiving the firearm, I opened the case and was impressed with the condition of the pistol and magazines. The pistol was coated in light oil but the magazines were dry. I thought it was nice how SA included a holster and mag carrier with the purchase. After reading through the owner’s manual, I decided to field strip, clean and lube the pistol prior to my first outing at the range.

The manual is pretty straight forward regarding the disassembly of the pistol listing the steps to follow along with diagrams. Everything worked out well with the breakdown and once the parts were out, I cleaned off the factory oil with some Hoppes No. 9, dried the parts, then lightly oiled them and reassembled everything in reverse order. No real surprises there, everything went back together smoothly…..and I didn’t even “Idiot Scratch” anything.

Once together, I cycled 5 dummy rounds though to check the feeding, again, worked nicely with no issues. Packed everything up and made ready for a range visit the following day. I purchased 150 rounds of Hunting Shack Montana .45 ACP, 230 gr. plated round nose, all new components.

Once at the range I decided to get to know the important parts of this pistol, with the thumb safety being one of them. Initially, it was very difficult to engage with my firing hand thumb. I’m not sure, but it could have been a combination of a new pistol which needed to be broken in and my thumb not used to making that maneuver to engage the safety. I felt as though my thumb was rather weak so I actuated the safety on and off multiple times with my support hand in an effort to break it in a bit. I noticed it did get a little easier as I went and by the end of my range session, I was having less trouble engaging the safety.

After having shot 150 rounds, I am happy to say the pistol and mags performed flawlessly. Not one failure to feed or jam. Everything worked smoothly, except for the plastic mag carrier. If I had to pick out a negative item here, it would be that. No matter how loose I adjusted the tension, I could not get the mags out smoothly nor replace them any easier. I don't know if mold was off or if they are all like this, but that will be the one thing I will replace, especially when I'm carrying concealed. Aside from that, I am very happy with the overall performance, fit and finish of the entire package. While this is my first Springfield Armory 1911, it definitley won't be my last.
