The Phoenix Arms HP22 is a ligthweight compact .22 LR psitol. When it was taken out of the box, the magazine was installed and would not initially release. Reading the instructions is very helpful, because there are two separate safeties on the firearm. The first is on the frame just under the slide, and has to be in the safe position in order to release the magazine. The second safety is on the slide and is the firing block safety. Both safeties have to be off in order for the pistol to fire. The main issue with the pistol was cycling. It seemed the ammunition was having difficulty loading into the chamber and then sometimes ejecting. Upon tearing the pistol down, it was quite obvious there was a burr on the side of the feed ramp near the chamber. The burr has since been removed, however, the firearm has not yet been tested since. For now, this is a two star pistol out of the box, not just because of the feed ramp issue, but it will undoubtedly be a challenge to utilize teh pistol effectively in an emergency situation while remembering to deactivate both safeties.

This is a convincing .22, heavy to the feel and elegantly designed. It’s one drawback, and it’s a major one, is the complexity in firing it. It has no less than four safeties, all of which need to be disengaged in sequence. It makes for a very awkward “draw and fire”. I bought it to teach my wife, but it was too challenging for her, and I ended up instructing her on my 45 acp, which she found straightforward and learnable. I rate it 3 stars, although the star function on this review page does not seem to work properly.

    Marvin, disassembly and reassembly is pretty straight forward. Little more difficult than standard pistols because of the recoil spring.     Paul, it is standard blueing which is a matte black appearing finish. It is not as durable as the nitride finish on higher priced firearms. The Nickel Finish version would be preferable. Cheers and stay safe!

    Robert, no sir, due to melting laws. Any handgun having a barrel, slide, frame or receiver that has a die casting of zinc
    alloy or any other non-homogenous metal, which will melt or deform at a temperature of 800degrees F or less.
