• Q: Has the quality control from marlin gone up? I have a 2016 336 and the rear band screw breaks every 10th shot. Does marlin still have issues? If so, I’ll go with a Henry.

  here are some things to check on your 2016 336 "Besides bad screws here are the other causes of broken screws
  1. Holes in band not lined up with screw channel in barrel
  2. Screw channel in barrel cut too wide front to back allowing too much movement
  3. Rear band fits too loosely on the forend (shouldn't touch the barrel anyway) allowing too much movement of the forend with recoil
  4. Screw holes in band not horizontal. Screw goes in at an angle through the screw channel
  5. Screw channel cut to shallow. "

  Yes, Chris, it does - holds 6 rounds of 30-30 + one in the chamber. The Marlin 336W Lever-Action Rifle is a hunting machine. This rifle is chambered in .30-30 Winchester and has a 20" micro groove barrel. The magazine tube holds 6 rounds of ammunition, and the firearm comes in a blued finish with wood furniture. The rear sight is adjustable and the rifle includes a factory mounted and bore sighted 3-9x32mm scope.

• Q: What does ANYONE mean when they say Micro rifling ?

  In 1953 Marlin Firearms was issued U.S. Patent 3,100,358 for what was named MicroGroove Rifling, which was a departure from the standard "Ballard," or cut rifling. One purpose of Microgroove rifling was to increase the speed of producing rifle barrels. Microgroove rifling is described in the patent as having 5 grooves for every 1/10 of an inch bore diameter, and that the driving side of each land would be "tangentially disposed" to prevent accumulating fouling in use.
  Marlin introduced Microgroove rifling in their .22 rimfire barrels in July 1953, with 16 grooves that were .014" wide, and nominally .0015" deep.

• Q: does Marlin use micro groove on all their 30-30s?
  I shoot alot of hardcast and would prefer standard rifling.

• Q: I'm totally new to this, but I'm wondering what is the difference between this gun (model 70521) and model 70520? I noticed the safety is different, and the 70521 comes with a scope. Are there other differences that make up the price gap? Is one preferable to the other, and for what reasons? Thanks in advance.

  Aaron, the 20 has walnut stock vs birch of 21. The walnut wood is stronger than birch which will translate to less flex. And of course the scope.

• Q: Is the band plastic like on the laminate or is it metal?

  Its metal, and this is my favorite deer rifle. I hunt whitetail in the north east in a pine Forrest. This gun has never failed me for any distance through thick brush. I always use this or a very similar 30-30 Westernfield lever I got from my Pappy. But a few guns I know intimately and this is one of them. I use no scope on mine, open sights only. I've never missed and the gun has been through briars, snow, rain, everything and still has a smooth like new action. I love these guns.
