I bought this gun when i found myself without a deer rifle. As a senior I don't hunt as much as i used to so didn't want an expensive or overly sophisticated gun. I had been using a single shot .223--not an H&R--as a varmint gun. I was looking at an H&R and Bud's steered me towards this gun. At the time I bought this gun ammo was in short supply as was reloading supplies. I chose the .45-70 GOVT caliber simply because if I couldn't get smokeless powder, I could use a black powder equivalent and still reload and shoot. The .45-70 is suited to the terrain I hunt where the maximum open shot is 75 yards, and you often need brush busting capability too. Recoil can be bad especially that first shot when you aren't expecting it. Surprisingly the recoil from the "black" powder is worse than the smokeless powder recoil. I've killed a few paper targets but haven't taken the shot in the woods yet. If I get my freezer cleaned out maybe next season. The second reason this gun was attractive to me is at the time I bought it you could get interchangeable barrels in various calibers and shotgun gauges. Immediately after i bought it I couldn't easily find them. Those I could find folks wanted as much if not more than what I paid for the Rossi .45-70 from Bud's. It is still a good shooting gun at a good price.

This rifle looks like a 235 dollar gun but you will not find a better shooting gun. It shoots half dollar size groups at 100 yards I couldnt ask for more. Bud's was awesome i had my gun in hand in 3 days. The kick of this 45/70 is ALOT less then I thought it would be. The only complaint I have was the gun was very dirty and everything needed to be tightened but was a very easy fix. I can't wait to shoot something with it.

What a nice and sturdy rifle. The 45-70 kicks like a mule at times, but with good handling should not be an issue. The rifle itself is very well constructed, comes with scope base and the iron sights are very nice with the fiber optics in them and very visible. Was shooting center out of targets right out of box at 50yds. Bought an extra 223 barrel from Rossi and shot it also and same performance. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good 45/70 that's well built and very fun to shoot. We liked it so much I ordered a second for my father to own for the price. You cannot go wrong with this rifle and with the barrels able to change out for different calibers you cannot beat it though they can be hard to find since Rossi is not making allot anymore.

I think the quality is great. Mine arrived without scope mount, but Buds customer service took it upon themselves to find out why. They arranged with Rossi to ship me the missing mount. Thanks for the great customer service Buds.

Cheapest new 45/70 you are likely to find and to my surprise looks and shoots good, all acc came with mine, scope base and hammer extension, I didn't mount my scope yet so I'm not sure how pinpoint accurate it may be, with iron sights it shot an easy 3 inch group at fifty yards.

This is a great item and has a great price. I love shooting my new Rossi Wizard 45-70.
