I recently purchased a...
I recently purchased a Citadel Coach SXS shotgun in 12 ga. with the walnut furniture and colored case hardened receiver. I have put 100 rounds of clay target loads through the gun. I am happy with my purchase however there are a few details that are less than ideal. I will start with the positives. The shotgun looks very nice! The wood is not fancy, but it still looks good. The grain is straight and appears solid. I have no expectations that the stock will break because of defects in the wood. This is an inexpensive shotgun so my expectations were set accordingly. The finish on the wood is unblemished, even, smooth, and entirely appropriate for this gun. The recoil pad is thin, but comfortable with a slight amount of padding. The fit between the buttstock and the recoil pad is extremely well done, I am not able to feel any high or low points along the line between the two. The fore end latches tight and there is no wobble. The color case hardening is very well done, it is attractive without be distracting. The chambers allow me to "toss" out the spent casings with a brisk rearward jerk. I don't need to touch the casings with my hand, just a brisk jerk and away they fly. Now for the neutral comments. Remember that this is an inexpensive gun, so don't necessarily take these as defects. There are some minor machining marks on the exterior of the receiver. These marks are in the metal and are "under" the case hardening. These are not hideous and at a glance no one would even notice them, but if you look closely you can see them without difficulty. The stock to receiver wood interface has the wood sitting proud of the metal, not that big a deal, while it sits proud at least it is even and consistent. The fore end to its hardware is a very good fit, so they know how to do good fitting so the stock fitting was a bit of a surprise. Now for the negatives. When I first assembled the gun the action of closing and particularly opening the action was EXTREMELY stiff, to the point that I needed to put the receiver on my knee and push down hard on the barrel and stock to get it open. I own two other break action shotguns and this one was pretty bad. After a thorough cleaning, lubrication, and more than 500 cycles of the action plus 100 fired shells it is now not too bad. Stiff, but serviceable, certainly not easy to open, but I can do it quickly. I can now unload the gun with the butt under my arm and my off hand still where it is when I shoot out on the fore end. It does require some effort and it is still stiffer than I would like. The extractor was sticky and had some debris in the channel that required thorough cleaning and now works well, before the attention the extractor would stick and barely push the hulls out of the chambers. The trigger pull is extremely heavy. I choose to fire the right barrel first and the trigger pull averages 9 pounds 9 ounces. The left barrel when fired second is 11 pounds 2 ounces. Surely this shotgun is not a long distance rifle, but around 10 pounds is a bit much. I own 7 other shotguns and the only one that comes close to these numbers is a 98 year old Sterlingworth SXS and it is still 2 to 3 pounds lighter on its two triggers. Overall I'm giving it 4 stars. Very positive on appearance issues, but lacking on mechanical. Again, this is a shotgun sold at a price point, and I understand that and have rated it accordingly. Would I purchase it again, yes if I wanted a gun at this price point that I did not plan on shooting a ton. Ultimately I am planning on starting SASS Cowboy Action Shooting. My goal is to enjoy myself and not compete at a high or even moderate level. I just want to have fun and this shotgun should do exactly what I want it to do. I hope this was helpful to you.
