I like this rifle and I'm curious- I called my local sporting goods retailer and they are 500 less in price- why ?

Hi George and welcome. Buds priced are related to stock level and this unit may be low in stock. Still a far cry from $500 difference though. Of course, buy from wherever you can get the best deal. Hi George, it's hard to say why, but that is a big price difference. I really doubt it is tied to stock levels.
