I know this version is illegal in CA, but for what reason (I know the state is full of idiotic politicians and their sheep, but I'm looking for an answer beyond that)? This qualifies as an other type of firearm, not a shotgun, so shouldn't the 14.375 barrel not matter in the equation?

the shockwave is a controversial fire are as it is not a shotgun or a pistol. Hi Dominic and welcome. No, even though classified as a Firearm, CA State laws still restrict the less than 18-inch barrel. California considers anything that was designed to fire a shotgun shell a shotgun, and because the barrel is under 18.5" it'll be considered a short, barreled shotgun there.
