Hi Jack and welcome. There's a thin jam nut at the back of the rail between the rail and the receiver. The jam nut is the thin black ring between the handguard and receiver. The barrel nut is the internal nut with holes all around. You will loosen the jam nut by about 1/2 turn, then the handguard will unscrew from the barrel nut. You can leave the jam nut on the barrel nut when you remove the barrel nut. Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!
