Hi Marshall, yes, it is a slide lock. It is not meant to release the slide by pushing it, you should pull the slide back to chamber a round. Stay safe & have a great day!

Hi Marshall and welcome. The Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 9mm has a slide stop, but not a slide release. The slide stop has a detent that prevents the slide from closing when a magazine is inserted. Yes, you can use it to release the slide, but that is not its designed purpose. To release the slide, according to the manual, "Pull the side to the rear and release it, allowing it to carry fully forward." Cheers and stay safe!

The Slide Lock on this model does just that, it'll lock the slide back on the last round. Once you insert a full magazine you'll pull back on the slide & release to chamber the next round. Some say even on a model with a Slide lock/Slide release that it's best to just pull the slide back to chamber next round.
