Hi Clayton and welcome. The 45-70 is considered to be at its best inside 150 yards, with 175 to 200 yards being about as far as a prudent hunter should consider shooting. With a bit of practice and the right ammunition, there is no reason why the. 45-70 cannot be used effectively out to 250 yards. Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!
Back in the day when 45-70 came out, they could be known to shoot for 1000 yards. But this was extreme. In all reality, 200 yards is about as far as you'd want to actually shoot. Most shooting I've done with one is inside 100 yards and it does great. I might be willing to go 150 yards, but not much further. The drop is great.
