Hi William, this is the cut-off device. The cut-off is a safety device that makes it possible, when there is a cartridge in the chamber and in the magazine tube, to extract the live cartridge from the chamber without loading the next one and to keep the breech bolt in the open position.

Hi William and welcome. It is a recessed slot and is the cut-off device to prevent a 2nd shell being loaded with the bolt back and removing the loaded shell manually.
