That is a personal choice. 1911s come with 5" inch barrels, and people carry them.

I was told once that a edc should not be comfortable but comforting. So it's all personal preference, I've carried 5" 1911 and 3.5 inch 1911 and S&W shields.

The shorter the barrel, the faster that it can be unholstered. I have a PDP Full Size 4". Works well enough for me. I had heard that the 5" PDP was more for competition shooting. To each their own though.
