If I make a purchase and use layaway, after getting my firearm and shooting it if I don't seem to like it would I be able to return the item back?

No, once you take possession of it after doing the Transfer paperwork at your FFL, it's yours. The only thing I can suggest is see if there's ranges in your area that rent pistols. There you'll be able to check out several different models to find one that suits you. Or, if you have friends that may have the firearm you want. Ask them if you can go shoot it with them?

Once you take ownership it becomes a used gun, even if you don't fire it. I suggest looking it over real good to make sure you like it before you accept it. You can always sell it back to Bud's or make a trade with them.
