Hi Elizabeth and welcome. A pump action would be more reliable than a Semi-Auto. Just store semi-auto shotguns with the bolt locked back for best cycling reliability. With proper maintenance, rust is no issue. Hi Elizabeth, some of the best home defense shotguns include the Beretta 1301 Tactical and the  Mossberg 500 ATI Tactical.
The Beretta 1301 Tactical costs quite a bit more. 
The Maverick 88 is considered a good home defense shotgun due to its affordability, reliability, and ease of use, making it a popular choice for many. It offers solid stopping power and is designed to be durable and dependable in critical situations.
If you don't want to or can't put out the $$$ for the Beretta 1301 Tactical, I would go with the Maverick 88.
