If you're talking about an AR15 that States 5.56 then yes, it will most certainly shoot the lower pressure. 223 cartridge. If you're asking about a totally different firearm, the please repost your question with a specific firearm and model so that we can better answer your question.
most likely yes it can .223 will be fine in a guns that are chambered for either .223 or 5.56 DO NOT SHOOT 5.56 ammo in a gun marked .223

Hi Donald and welcome. Any firearm that is rated and chambered for 5.56 NATO or .223 will fire .223 no issue. A .223 Chambered firearm should only be fired with .223 and not the higher pressure 5.56 NATO ammunition. Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!
