if its on layaway you may contact the ffl it was being shipped to and see if he will run a nics check for you

Shane, you should speak with your local Sheriff who has the authority to run Background Checks and issue firearms purchase permits. Many states have several Harassment subsections that may not meet the definition of Domestic Violence under Federal law. He/She is considered a Chief Law Enforcement Officer should be able to advise you where you stand on this depending on the actual nature of your conviction. I am not an attorney but the "Physical contact" you mentioned with no injury may be the deciding factor.
