I buy from a few places 1St is The Armory https://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/Bulk-Ammo-223-Remington-5.56x45mm.html 2nd is ammo supply warehouse http://www.ammosupplywarehouse.com/ I also use Gun bot search engine to find the best deal on ammo http://www.gunbot.net/ammo/rifle/223/
as long as your gun likes it a suggest .223 because like you say its cheaper. It may be wise for your budget to pay cash but I uses credit cards when I do mail order

Hi Elisabeth I use https://www.bulkammo.com/
Elisabeth I almost exclusively use Ammo Seek (http://ammoseek.com/). It is a website engine that runs an algorithm on many online vendor ammunition (and other things s well). it is real-time and you can search by caliber to find the "Best" ammunition deal at that time. It shows the "cost per round" including shipping so you are guaranteed to get the best price at the time of your order. Just take a few minutes to get used to the layout and then you never have to worry about did you get the best deal on ammunition again.
Elisabeth, in addition to Ammo Seek, I would recommend your initial ammunition stock up for both 223 and 5.56 be on a ratio of 70% 223 and 30% 5.56 - Welcome to the Community!
